Salary Band: $80,000 to $120,000
Under the supervision of the COO, the Operations Manager facilitates the execution of projects and services vital to Ideas Lab’s ongoing activities and growth. They oversee operational matters; support the development and implementation of policies and procedures; make recommendations to improve efficiency; and support the expansion of resources. This includes Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security (EHSS); Implementation of Organization Policies (Policies); Purchasing, Customs and Logistics (Procurement); Office and Research Space Design, Planning and Allocation (Infrastructure); and Site Operations and Facilities, Laboratory Support and Management (Facilities). They continuously seek to improve the overall effectiveness and success of the organization by developing and leading other initiatives of a time-limited nature (Special Projects).
Essential Functions
- Ensures compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations through inspections, audits, and the development of organizational policies
- Onboards new staff with respect to organizational health and safety, facilities access and orientation, and other operational matters
- Leads periodic company-wide or targeted training sessions
- Coordinates hazardous waste disposal
- Manages emergency response
- Co-chairs Joint Health & Safety Committee
- Stays current on health and safety matters via legislative review, training courses, and conferences
- Develops and reviews Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for laboratory equipment
- Ensures equipment is in good and safe working order; perform and/or oversees routine maintenance and arranges for technical support as required
- Maintain all required permits, certification and calibration for facilities and instruments
- Oversees the entire procurement lifecycle, including purchasing, customs clearance, receiving, and inventory
- Liaises with external parties (e.g., contractors, salespeople, technicians, landlord) for routine maintenance, repairs, and Special Projects
- Maintains site access and security clearance programs
- Responds to external audits relating to matters including labour, health and safety, and trade compliance
- Carries out the Operations Team’s various EHSS, Facilities and Operations, and Scientific Support functions for the organization
- Supports procurement and logistics through supervision of the Operations team
Required Education, Experience, Professional Designations
- Advanced scientific or engineering education (BSc required, MSc or PhD preferred)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience overseeing the use and maintenance of scientific equipment in a laboratory environment
- Skilled in project management and driving continual improvement for positive change
- Joint Health and Safety Committee experience and certification preferred
- Occupational health and safety designation (i.e., CRSP, CRST) an asset
- Superior ability to build and manage interpersonal relationships with technical and administrative staff
- Requires Reliability Security Clearance
- Scientific understanding from a support and resourcing perspective
- Comfortable with financial matters pertaining to procurement
- Knowledge of facilities management an asset
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must have fine motor movements in fingers/hands to operate computers and other office equipment
- Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or reach
